Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 13, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains what information Expensio ("the App", "we", "us") collects, how it's used, and who it's shared with. Expensio is developed and operated by Osioreamhe Ugheoke ("the Developer"). By using Expensio, you agree to the practices described here.
1. Information We Collect
We only collect what's needed to provide expense tracking, sync your data across devices, and (if you choose to subscribe) process payment. Here's exactly what that is:
Account information
When you create an account, we collect your email address, a password (handled entirely by our authentication provider, Firebase Authentication — we never see or store your password ourselves), and the display name you provide.
Expense data
Each expense you log is stored with its amount, category, an optional note, and date. We do not attach your location, device identifiers, or any other metadata to your expense records.
App preferences
Your chosen currency, theme (light/dark), and notification settings are stored locally on your device (and, for currency and theme, are not synced to our servers).
Biometric data
If you enable Face ID / fingerprint unlock, authentication happens entirely through your device's operating system. Expensio never receives, stores, or transmits your biometric data — we only store a simple on/off preference locally on your device.
Subscription & payment information
If you subscribe to a paid plan, your email address and account ID are shared with our payment processor, Paystack, to set up and manage your subscription. Expensio never sees or stores your card details — payment is entered directly on Paystack's secure checkout page.
2. How We Use Your Information
- To create and secure your account, and keep your expense data in sync across your devices.
- To show you spending insights, category breakdowns, and monthly summaries within the app.
- To send you an email notification when your account is signed into, as a security measure so you can spot unauthorized access.
- To send optional daily reminder notifications, generated and delivered entirely on your device.
- To process subscription payments and manage your billing status, via Paystack.
We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not sell your personal information to anyone.
3. Third-Party Services
Expensio relies on a small number of third-party services to function. Here is exactly what each one is used for and what data it receives:
| Service | Purpose | Data shared |
|---|---|---|
| Firebase Authentication & Firestore (Google) | Account sign-in and cloud storage/sync of your profile and expense data | Email, display name, expense records |
| Paystack | Subscription payment processing | Email address, account ID; card details go directly to Paystack, never through Expensio |
| EmailJS | Sends the "new sign-in" security notification email | Email address, display name, sign-in platform (Android/iOS/Web) and time |
| open.er-api.com | Provides public currency exchange rate data for display | None — this is an anonymous, public read-only request with no personal data attached |
Each of these providers has its own privacy policy governing how it handles data on its own infrastructure. As a Firebase-enabled app, standard baseline diagnostic data (such as app version and basic operational signals) may also be collected automatically by Google's infrastructure, independent of anything the app explicitly tracks.
4. Data Storage & Security
Your account and expense data are stored on Google's Firebase infrastructure (Cloud Firestore), protected by security rules that restrict access to your own data only. Data in transit is encrypted (HTTPS/TLS). While we take reasonable steps to protect your information, no method of storage or transmission over the internet is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
6. Your Rights & Choices
- Access & correction: you can view and edit your name and email directly in the app's Settings screen at any time.
- Deletion: deleting your account removes your profile document and all of your expense records from our database, along with your authentication account. Some records tied to billing history (such as subscription/payment event logs required for financial record-keeping) may be retained separately as required for compliance purposes.
- Notifications: daily reminders and the sign-in security email can each be turned off from Settings.
- Biometric login: can be disabled at any time from Settings; this only affects the on-device preference, since no biometric data is ever stored by us in the first place.
7. Data Retention
We retain your account and expense data for as long as your account remains active. If you delete your account, your profile and expense data are deleted as described in Section 6. Backups and logs may persist for a limited period afterward before being fully purged from our systems.
8. Children's Privacy
Expensio is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the age of 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us using the details below so we can remove it.
9. International Data Transfers
Our service providers (Firebase/Google Cloud, Paystack, EmailJS) may store and process data in countries other than your own. By using Expensio, you consent to your information being transferred to and processed in these locations, which may have different data protection laws than your country of residence.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the app or applicable law. We'll update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page when we do. Continued use of Expensio after a change means you accept the revised policy.
